Research project "IPotential − Successful exploitation of patents" sponsored by CTI
Start: Autumn 2009
Duration: 2 years
The CTI-sponsored research project "IPotential − Successful exploitation of patents" investigates the exploitation of patents and the effective use of patents. In collaboration with our research partner companies Cytos, Novartis, Roche and Sika the Competence Center for Intellectual Property Management aims to development a holistic and applicable model for a successful externalisation of patents. To achieve these objectives the project design consists of the three major parts, i.e. working group, case studies on intermediaries and bilateral projects:
1. Working group:
The working group is the first part of the project. The objectives of the working group are:
- Access to state-of-the-art theory and research.
- Open exchange of successful practices of innovative companies and insights in their IP management.
- Development of more effective and efficient solutions and improvement of existing approaches.
- Documentation of the mutually developed perceptions.
2. Case studies on patent intermediaries:
The second part of the project prepares case studies on patent intermediaries. The current working definition of IP intermediary is: "An IP intermediary is a service provider between two actors with IP transfer intention".
Objectives of the IP intermediaries ranking is to generate a typology of current IP intermediaries according to the following aspects:
- General information about the IP intermediary.
- Field of business of the IP intermediary.
- Business model of the IP intermediary.
3. Bilateral projects:
The third part of the project is based on bilateral projects between the research partner companies and ITEM-HSG. In these bilateral projects the intention is to solve company specific problems in the area of patent exploitation and the implementation of solutions. It is also intended to analyse the firms' competencies, critical parameters and potentials.
