Bits to Energy Lab
Prof. Dr. Elgar Fleisch
Dr. Thorsten Staake
In the bits-to-Energy Lab a team of engineers, computer scientists, psychologists and economists led by Dr. Thorsten Staake, investigates and developes solutions to motivate consumers to an efficient use of resources. The focus of the work, is the combination of knowledge in the field of ubiquitous computing and the findings from behavioral economics. In close cooperation with Prof. Dr. Friedemann Mattern, Department of Computer Science at ETH Zurich, Prof. Dr. Gerhard Tröster from the Institute of Electronics at the ETH Zurich and Prof. Dr. Andreas Herrmann from the Center for Customer Insight at the University of St.Gallen (HSG) result approaches for the reduction of electricity, drinking water and fuel consumption. For this quantitatively-driven research, the lab developed technical platforms such as the power-saving portal velix or the water meter Amphiro and thus leads by large-scale field studies. The first results and the numerous requests by companies can assume that this lab will also leave its mark in the coming years in research and practice. Among the key partners of the Labs include illerke vkw, Landis & Gyr and BKW. Further funding the team receives from the Federal Office of Energy and by the SNF.
